Magnesium chloride serves as precursor to other magnesium compounds, for example by precipitation:
MgCl2(aq) + Ca(OH)2(aq) → Mg(OH)2(s) + CaCl2(aq)
It can be electrolysed to give magnesium metal:[5]
MgCl2(l) → Mg(l) + Cl2(g)
This process is practiced on a substantial scale.
Magnesium chloride is used for a variety of other applications besides the production of magnesium: the manufacture of textiles, paper, fireproofing agents, cements and refrigeration brine,[5] and dust and erosion control. Mixed with hydrated magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride forms a hard material called Sorel cement.
Magnesium ion Mg2+ (usually added as the chloride) is an important component in the polymerase chain reaction, a procedure used to amplify DNA fragments. It is generally used in experimental biology whenever RNA and DNA and their enzymes are to function in vitro, since Mg2+ is a necessary associate ion for nucleotides in biology, such as ATP.
Magnesium chloride is also used in several medical and topical (skin related) applications. It has been used in pills as supplemental sources of magnesium, where it serves as a soluble compound which is not as laxitive as magnesium sulfate, and more bioavailable than magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide, since it does not require stomach acid to produce soluble Mg2+ ion. It can also be used as an effective anaesthetic for cephalopods, some species of crustaceans,[6] and several species of bivalve, including oysters.[7]

Culinary use
Magnesium chloride is an important coagulant (E511 [8][clarification needed]) used in the preparation of tofu from soy milk. In Japan it is sold as nigari (にがり, derived from the Japanese word for "bitter"), a white powder produced from seawater after the sodium chloride has been removed, and the water evaporated. In China it is called lushui (卤水). Nigari or lushui consists mostly of magnesium chloride, with some magnesium sulfate and other trace elements. It is also an ingredient in baby formula milk.
Use as an anti-icer
A number of state highway departments throughout the United States have decreased the use of rock salt and sand on roadways and have increased the use of solutions of magnesium chloride (often called "liquid magnesium chloride") as a de-icer or anti-icer. Magnesium chloride is much less toxic to plant life surrounding highways and airports, and is less corrosive to concrete and steel (and other iron alloys) than sodium chloride. The liquid magnesium chloride is sprayed on dry pavement (tarmac) prior to precipitation or wet pavement prior to freezing temperatures in the winter months to prevent snow and ice from adhering and bonding to the roadway. The application of anti-icers is utilized in an effort to improve highway safety. Magnesium chloride is also sold in crystal form for household and business use to de-ice sidewalks and driveways. In these applications, the compound is applied after precipitation has fallen or ice has formed, instead of previously.
The use of this compound seems to show an improvement in driving conditions during and after freezing precipitation, but it can damage electric utilities. This occurs in two ways: contamination of insulators, causing tracking and arcing across them, and corrosion of steel and aluminium poles and pole hardware.

Use in dust and erosion control
Road departments and private industry may apply liquid or powdered magnesium chloride to control dust and erosion on unimproved (dirt or gravel) roads and dusty job sites such as quarries. Its hygroscopy makes it absorb moisture from the air, controlling the number of small particles which become airborne. Magnesium Chloride is acidic due to the hydrochloric compound for the amplification of electrified hydrogen atoms. Owners of indoor arenas (e.g. for horse riding) may apply magnesium chloride to sand or other floor materials to control dust.
Use in hydrogen storage
Magnesium chloride has shown promise as a storage material for hydrogen. Ammonia, which is rich in hydrogen atoms, is used as an intermediate storage material. Ammonia can be effectively adsorbed onto solid magnesium chloride, forming Mg(NH3)6Cl2. Ammonia is released by mild heat, and is then passed through a catalyst to give hydrogen gas.
Medical use
MgCl2 commonly known as magnesium chloride. One veterinary study in 1989 indicated some effectiveness against tumors when used as a feed additive.[9] In a recent experiment with mice, MgCl2 fortification of drinking water reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels, although overall plasma lipid levels were similar at the beginning and the end of the study.[10]
Marine aquarium use
Magnesium in natural seawater values are between (1250 mg/L-1350 mg/L). Magnesium helps to stabilize the correct combination of calcium, alkalinity and ph values. Severely low values of magnesium (900 mg/L or below) can cause low pH values and an inability to maintain proper alkalinity and calcium values. If levels of magnesium become too low, coral growth ceases; decline of coral health follows. Carbonates and calcium are essential for all growth of corals, coralline algae, clams and invertebrates. Maintaining the correct magnesium values is very important and is indirectly responsible for coral and coralline algae growth by making it possible to maintain correct calcium, alkalinity and pH values. Magnesium can be depleted by mangrove plants and the use of excessive Kalkwasser or by going beyond natural calcium, alkalinity and pH values.[11]
Toxicology
Magnesium toxicity is rare in healthy individuals with a normal diet, because excess magnesium is readily excreted in urine by the kidneys. If an extremely large amount is eaten, it will have effects similar to magnesium sulfate, causing diarrhea, which may make a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium ions are bitter tasting. Calcium compounds have similar toxicity, too.

Key mineral may help beat diabetes
It could be the simplest way to slash your diabetes risk: Add a serving or two of magnesium-rich beans and greens to your meals.
Magnesium has long been linked to diabetes prevention--and a new study confirms it. Researchers have found that those who get their share of this crucial mineral have a dramatically lower risk of the disease.
Too bad most of us aren't getting our share... but more on that in a moment.
Researchers tracked 4,497 men and women between the ages of 18 and 30 years old at the start of the study for 20 years, and found that those who got 200 milligrams of magnesium for every 1,000 calories consumed were 47 percent less likely to become diabetic than those who took in just 100 milligrams of the mineral for every 1,000 calories consumed.
Since only 330 of the subjects--slightly more than 7 percent--developed diabetes, it might be easy to chalk this up to a statistical fluke.
Easy... but wrong, because the benefits went far beyond the numbers. The researchers found that those with the higher levels of magnesium had lower levels of insulin resistance and inflammation markers, according to the study in Diabetes Care.
And, as I mentioned, other studies have also established a clear link between the mineral and disease protection. One study even found that higher levels of magnesium lowered diabetes risk across all age groups and in both genders.
But unless you're eating a steady diet of magnesium-rich foods or taking a supplement, odds are you don't have enough.
By some estimates, between 50 and 70 percent of all U.S. adults get less than the recommended daily allowance of between 300 and 400 milligrams per day... with some getting barely 20 percent of what they really need.
And that's a huge mistake... because in addition to beating back diabetes, magnesium can also help bring your blood pressure down to healthy levels and reduce your stroke risk. Magnesium is also essential to bone health, muscle strength, immune system function and more.
In fact, magnesium is a catalyst for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body that we know of--and probably many more that we don't.
The best sources of magnesium include nuts, grains, beans and greens--especially spinach. And if you don't get enough from your food, magnesium supplements cost just a few bucks a bottle.
It could turn out to be the best investment you'll ever make--just be sure to pair it with a healthy diet, because no mineral in the world will protect you from the ravages of snacks, fast food and frozen dinners.

What other drugs will affect magnesium chloride?
Before taking magnesium chloride, talk to your doctor if you are taking a tetracycline antibiotic such as tetracycline (Sumycin, Achromycin V, and others), demeclocycline (Declomycin), doxycycline (Vibramycin, Monodox, Doxy, and others), minocycline (Minocin, Dynacin, and others), or oxytetracycline (Terramycin, and others); a fluoroquinolone antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro), ofloxacin (Floxin), enoxacin (Penetrex), norfloxacin (Noroxin), sparfloxacin (Zagam), levofloxacin (Levaquin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), grepafloxacin (Raxar), and others; penicillamine (Cuprimine); digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps); or nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Furadantin, others).
You may not be able to take magnesium chloride, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.

Magnesium chloride is one of many minerals found in ocean water. According to pain management specialist Dr. Norman Shealy, most people are deficient in the mineral magnesium, and this causes chronic conditions including fibromyalgia, migraine, heart disease and possibly even cancer. You can take magnesium orally, but your digestive tract does not easily absorb it. For severe deficiency, IV infusions may be needed. The easiest delivery method is through the skin via a magnesium chloride bath or oil.

Purchase nigari flakes at an Asian food market or online. Nigari flakes are magnesium chloride derived from sea salt and are usually used for making tofu. A one-pound container typically costs less than $2. One online source is NaturalImport.com (see Resources for a link).

Pour nigari flakes into a one-quart bottle or jar until filled. Fill loosely and do not pack the flakes down. A one-pound bag of flakes will probably be enough for at least two bottles.

Add enough purified water to cover the flakes completely (one to two cups). You may need to do this slowly to avoid overflowing the jar. The water will absorb into the flakes gradually, so you may need to add more water after a while to fill the jar.

Allow two or three days for the water and flakes to fully incorporate, SilverMedicine.org recommends. Even though no oil exists in either the water or the nigari flakes, the mixture will take on an oily look and feel. Once it has reached this murky stage, you can begin using it.

Apply the magnesium chloride oil to aching muscles and joints, rubbing it in thoroughly. It will be absorbed through your skin to replenish your cells with the magnesium they need for more efficient function. Sheahy states on his website that most pain is the result of overstressed cells, and sufficient magnesium alleviates this stress. A study published in the European Journal of Anaesthesiolog by H. Kara, et al, showed that magnesium supplementation before and during surgery greatly reduced postoperative pain.

Soak in magnesium chloride for an overall tonic to raise your body's levels of this important mineral. Add five cups of nigari flakes to a tub of warm (not hot) water and soak in it until the water gets too cold for comfort. Fibromyalgia and migraine sufferers, as well as those with high blood pressure and heart problems, can benefit from this soak three or four times a week until their magnesium levels have normalized. All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Magnesium Chloride Sustained-Release Tablets:
Diarrhea.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Magnesium Chloride Sustained-Release Tablets:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); nausea; slow reflexes.
Side Effects by Body System
Other
Other side effects have resulted from toxicity (hypermagnesemia). Mild hypermagnesemia is generally well-tolerated. Moderate or severe hypermagnesemia primarily affects the nervous and cardiovascular systems. The effects of hypermagnesemia may be worsened by the presence of hypocalcemia, especially in patients with uremia.
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included diarrhea. Magnesium toxicity has been associated with nausea (magnesium levels of 4 to 5 mEq/L) and rare cases of paralytic ileus (magnesium levels greater than 5 mEq/L).
Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have resulted from the suppression of neuromuscular transmission in the CNS and at the neuromuscular junction by magnesium (antagonized by calcium). The degree of severity of these side effects has been dependent on the serum magnesium level. Clinically, if serum magnesium (Mg) levels increase to 4 to 7 mEq/L, there may be a decrease in tendon reflexes, muscle weakness and/or mental confusion/sedation. At levels of 7 to 10 mEq/L the respiratory rate slows and the blood pressure falls. At levels of 10 to 15 mEq/L there is usually profound mental depression, areflexia, coma and respiratory paralysis. Magnesium also has a curare-like effect at the neuromuscular junction at serum levels above 10 mEq/L. Death is not uncommon when serum magnesium levels rise to 15 mEq/L.
Cardiovascular
The cardiovascular consequences of hypermagnesemia are due to peripheral vasodilation. Hypotension may be observed when serum magnesium levels rise to 7 to 10 mEq/L, becoming severe when serum magnesium levels rise above 10 mEq/L. Magnesium can also depress myocardial conductivity at levels greater than 10 mEq/L. This can result in bradyarrhythmias. While some patients are inexplicably able to tolerate extraordinary magnesium levels, there is a significant risk of asystole when levels rise to 25 mEq/L. The risk of cardiotoxicity from hypermagnesemia is increased in the presence of hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, acidosis, digitalis therapy, and renal insufficiency.
Cardiovascular side effects have included hypotension, depressed myocardial conductivity and asystole.
Metabolic
Acute hypermagnesemia may cause hypocalcemia due to suppression of the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and competition for renal tubular reabsorption between calcium (Ca) and magnesium. The latter can lead to decreased Ca reabsorption and hypercalciuria, which aggravates the hypocalcemia produced by decreased release of PTH.
Metabolic side effects have included hypocalcemia.
General
Magnesium chloride is generally well tolerated.

Chloride, of course, is required to produce a large quantity of gastric acid each day and is also needed to stimulate starch-digesting enzymes. Magnesium is the mineral of rejuvenation and prevents the calcification of our organs and tissues that is characteristic of the old-age related degeneration of our body.
Using other magnesium salts is less advantageous because these have to be converted into chlorides in the body anyway. We may use magnesium as oxide or carbonate but then we need to produce additional hydrochloric acid to absorb them. Many aging individuals, especially with chronic diseases who desperately need more magnesium cannot produce sufficient hydrochloric acid and then cannot absorb the oxide or carbonate. Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate. It is soluble but not well absorbed and acts mainly as a laxative. Chelated magnesium is well absorbed but much more expensive and lacks the beneficial contribution of the chloride ions. Orotates are good but very expensive for the amount of magnesium that they provide and both orotates and chelates seem to lack the infection-fighting potential of the magnesium chloride."....

MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE IN ACUTE AND CHRONIC DISEASES

Back in 1915, a French surgeon, Prof. Pierre Delbet,MD, was looking for a solution to cleanse wounds, because he had found out that the traditional antiseptic solutions actually mortified tissues and facilitated the infection instead of preventing it.
He tested several mineral solutions and discovered that a Magnesium Chloride solution was not only harmless for tissues, but it had also a great effect over leucocytic activity and phagocytosis; so it was perfect for external wounds treatment.
Dr.Delbet performed a lot of "in vitro" and "in vivo" experiments with this solution and he became aware that it was good not only for external applications, but it was also a powerful immuno-stimulant if taken by injections or even by mouth. He called this effect "cytophilaxis". In some "in vivo" experiments it was able to increase phagocytosis rate up to 300%.
Dr.Delbet serendipitously discovered that this oral solution had also a tonic effect on many people and so became aware that the Magnesium Chloride had an effect on the whole organism. In a brief time, he received communications of very good therapeutics effects of this "therapy" from people that were taking Magnesium Chloride for its tonic properties and who were suffering from various ailments. Prof.Delbet began to closely study the subject and verified that the Magnesium Chloride solution was a very good therapy for a long list of diseases.
He obtained very good results in: colitis, angiocholitis and cholecystitis in the digestive apparatus; Parkinson's Disease, senile tremors and muscular cramps in the nervous system; acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, itch of various origins and chilblains in the skin.
There was a strengthening of hair and nails, a good effect on diseases typical of the aged (impotency, prostatic hypertrophy, cerebral and circulatory troubles), and on diseases of allergic origin (hay-fever, asthma, urticaria and anaphylactic reactions).
Then Prof.Delbet began to investigate the relationship between Magnesium and Cancer. After a lot of clinical and experimental studies, he found that Magnesium Chloride had a very good effect on prevention of cancer and that it was able to cure several precancerous conditions: leucoplasia, hyperkeratosis, chronic mastitis, etc.
Epidemiological studies confirmed Delbet's views and demonstrated that the regions with soil more rich in magnesium had less cancer incidence, and vice versa.
In 1943 another French doctor, A.Neveu,MD, used the Magnesium Chloride solution in a case of diphteria to reduce the risks of anaphylactic reaction due to the anti-diphteric serum that he was ready to administer. To his great surprise, when the next day the laboratory results confirmed the diagnosis of diphteria, the little girl was completely cured, before he could use the serum.
He credited the immuno-stimulant activity to the solution for this result, and he tested it in some other diphteric patients. All the patients were cured in a very short time (24-48 hours), with no after-effects.
As Magnesium Chloride has no direct effect on bacteria (i.e.it is not an antibiotic ), Neveu thought that its action was aspecific, immuno-enhancing, so it could be useful, in the same manner, also against viral diseases. So he began to treat some cases of poliomyelitis, and had the same wonderful results.
He was very excited and tried to divulge the therapy, but he ran into a wall of hostility and obstructionism from "Official Medicine". Neither Neveu or Delbet (who was a member of the Academy of Medicine) was able to diffuse Neveu's extraordinary results.
The opposition was total: Professors of Medicine, Medical Peer-Reviews, the Academy itself, all were against the two doctors. "Official Medicine" saw in Magnesium Chloride Therapy a threat to its new and growing business: vaccinations.
Dr. Neveu wasn't discouraged by this and continued to test this therapy in a wide range of diseases. He obtained very good results in: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, hoarseness, common cold, influenza, asthma, bronchitis, broncho-pneumonia, pulmonary emphysema, "children diseases" (whooping-cough, measles, rubella, mumps, scarlet fever...), alimentary and professional poisonings, gastroenteritis, boils, abscesses, erysipelas, whitlow, septic pricks (wounds), puerperal fever and osteomyelitis.
But the indications for Magnesium Chloride therapy don't end here. In more recent years other physicians (and I among these) have verified many of Delbet's and Neveu's applications and have tried the therapy in other pathologies: asthmatic acute attack, shock, tetanus (for these the solution is administered by intravenous injection); herpes zoster, acute and chronic conjunctivitis, optic neuritis, rheumatic diseases, many allergic diseases, spring- asthenia and Cronic Fatigue Syndrome (even in cancer it can be an useful adjuvant.
The preceding lists of ailments are by no means exhaustive; maybe other illnesses can be treated with this therapy but, as this is a relatively "young" treatment, we are pioneers, and we need the help of all physicians of good will to definitely establish all the true possibilities of this wonderful therapy.
From a practical standpoint, please remember that only Magnesium CHLORIDE has this "cytophilactic" activity, and no other magnesium salt; probably it's a molecular, and not a merely ionic, matter.
The solution to be used is a 2.5% Magnesium Chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2-6H2O) solution (i.e.: 25 grams/1 liter of water). Dosages are as follows:
- Adults and children over 5 years old..................125 cc
- 4 year old children...........................................100 cc
- 3 year old children...........................................80 cc
- 1-2 year old children........................................60 cc
- over 6 months old children............................... 30 cc
- under 6 months old children..............................15 cc
These doses must be administered BY MOUTH. The only contraindication to Magnesium Chloride Therapy is a severe renal insufficiency*.
As the magnesium chloride has a mild laxative effect, diarrhea sometimes appears on the first days of therapy, expecially when high dosages (i.e. three doses a day) are taken; but this is not a reason to stop the therapy.
The taste of the solution is not very good (it has a bitter-saltish flavor) so a little fruit juice (grapefruit, orange, lemon) can be added to the solution, or it can be even used in the place of water to make the solution itself. Grapefruit juice masks the bitter taste very well (expecially if cold).
For CHRONIC diseases the standard treatment is one dose morning and evening for a long period (several months at least, but it can be continued for years.
In ACUTE diseases the dose is administered every 6 hours (every 3 hours the first two doses if the case is serious); then space every 8 hours and then 12 hours as improvement goes on. After recovery it's better going on with a dose every 12 hours for some days.
As a PREVENTIVE measure, and as a magnesium supplement, one dose a day can be taken indefinitely. Magnesium Chloride, even if it's an inorganic salt, is very well absorbed and it's a very good supplemental magnesium source.
For INTRAVENOUS injection, the formula is:
Magnesium Chloride hexahydrate......................25 grams
Distilled Water.................................................100 cc
Make injections of 10-20cc (very slowly, over 10-20 minutes) once or twice a day. Of course the solution must be sterilized.
This therapy gives very good results also in Veterinary Medicine, at the appropriate dosages depending upon the size and kind of animals.

*Dr. Raul Vergini says, that "this is true only for severe renal insufficiency," where an obvious contraindication may exist; but this is also true for all minerals, that cannot be easily eliminated by a seriously impaired kidney. In all other cases, there are no risks. I never heard or read of any problem. The quantity of elemental magnesium contained in a 125 cc dose of the 2.5% solution is around 500 mg. That is not a large dose! Anyway, I think that it is a good precaution to advise people with problems to consult their physician."

According to Raul Vergini, M.D., the 25% solution for IV injections is correct. Personally I never use it, I use only the oral way. But it was used over thirty years ago by some French doctors (5 grams in 20 ml of saline solution of distilled water) to treat tetanus and other less dangerous diseases (asthmatic attacks, choc, opthalmic herpes, herpes zoster, Quincke's oedema, itching, etc.). It was injected very slowly (in 10-20 minutes), and the results were very good.
"Moreover also the Myers' cocktail contains 2-5 ml of a 20% solution of magnesium chloride (along with other products that may contribute to make the solution more diluted). However, I think that if there are problems of 'burning' with the 25% concentration, it should be possible to use, with the same results, a 2.5% solution (the same used by mouth) by dissolving 5 grams of magnesium chloride in 200 ml of distilled water. The solution must be sterilized.
"The intramuscular way is not used because the solution is painful."
